Ayurvedic Haircare: A Beginner’s Guide

Ayurvedic Haircare: A Beginner’s Guide
Ambika Arumugam

In our contemporary period, we have several products that claim to give the best care for hair. But these products usually provide only a short-term solution. This is when we start looking for a more sustainable option. Rather than focusing only on the surface, Ayurvedic haircare treats hair as a mirror of total well-being. It works on the root causes by balancing the body’s energies, called doshas.

Knowing Your Hair Type

According to Ayurveda, hair is linked to three doshas. Vata hair is usually curly, dry, and fragile, so it needs extra nourishment. Pitta hairis fine, straight, and sometimes lighter in colour, but too much heat in the body can make it thin or fall out early. Kapha hair is thick, shiny, and strong, though excess Kapha can make the scalp oily. Understanding your type helps in choosing the right care.

Daily and Weekly Care

A good routine is built on small habits. Combing gently every morning spreads natural oils and boosts circulation. Oiling once a week is highly recommended—warm some herbal oil, massage it in for 10–15 minutes and leave it for a few hours. This feeds the roots and also relaxes the mind. Once a month, applying a simple mask of amla, yogurt, or honey gives hair extra strength.

Cleansing the Hair

Strong chemical shampoos can strip away natural oils. Ayurveda suggests using herbs like reetha, shikakai, or amla for gentle cleansing. These keep the scalp clean without making it too dry. Many herbal shampoos now combine neem, aloe vera, or bhringraj, which makes them both safe and effective.

When and How to Oil

For most people, oiling once a week is enough. But if the hair is too dry or has dandruff, oiling two to three times may help. Evenings are the best time, around 6 PM, especially for people who often get headaches. Oil should stay in the hair for two to six hours. Very dry hair may benefit from overnight oiling, but it should not be left for more than eight hours to avoid clogged pores.

Why Ayurvedic Ingredients in Shampoo works well for Hair-Care

The answer is simple, unlike regular- modern shampoos, Ayurvedic ones avoid chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and artificial scents, that makes your hair dull and unhealthy after long usage. Instead, they use natural herbs.

Bhringraj, sometimes called “food for hair,” strengthens the roots, while neem helps fight scalp infections. Picking a shampoo suited to your dosha gives the best long-term results.

The Ayurvedic Way

What makes Ayurveda different is its belief that hair health is tied to lifestyle. Diet, digestion, stress, and sleep all play a part. Results don’t show overnight, it usually takes three to six months, but they are lasting. Since everyone has a unique dosha mix, the approach is naturally personalised.
